Column Explanation

What is "Audio Standard"?

MP1 MPEG-1 Layer 1 - sub-band encoded (compression takes place in time domain)
MP2 MPEG-1 Layer 2 - sub-band encoded (compression takes place in time domain) - needs one frame for one audio frame and if one frame is missing, the previous frame could be repeated - MP2 is the dominant codec used in DTV broadcasts, since it is part of the specifications for DVB and DAB standards
MP3 MPEG-1 Layer 3 - frequency domain encoder - needs more than one frame to restore one audio frame - MP3 has a higher frequency resolution, allowing for better quality in a narrower band.
AC3 AC3 - digital compression of the original PCM samples of sound - increases the number of audio channels to more than 2. The X.1 in Audio Format refers to a fractional bandwidth channel intended to convey only low frequency (subwoofer) signals
